I never see hunters with this type of pet. I know I've tamed one once for the hell of it. But sadly I put him away because I found the upkeep on feeding and keeping him happy wasn't worth the effort. He's never freaking going to be happy :*(

After seeing the new pet talent calculators and new talents that they will have in WOTLK, I think we'll be seeing more of this pets along with the spiders. Especially in PvP.

My draenei hunter Omeyga has had a purple hyena named Alfie since level 17 n_n. He's adorable! Hyenas eat fruit as well as meat. I also have a ravager named Stardust which I bring on raids. I'm so glad hyenas are getting buffed. The new talents trees look promising, hopefully more hunters will get what they like instead of all those cats.........
Edit: Sadly they've changed it so now hyenas only eat meat....This doesn't make much sense because hyenas are supposed to be scavengers.

I understand the use of this pet, but with Frost Trap, Concussive Shot, and Wing Clip, I don't really see this being that viable.

After the Echoes of Doom patch, I found myself randomly grabbing and experimenting with various animals as pets while I collected candy buckets.
On a whim I tamed a hyena in the barrens, and after seeing that little guy dash off and tear into things I fell in love. A dew days later I was off to do Headless Horseman at SM and I realized I was petless. I ducked into the library wing to get a hyena and haven't been satisfied with any other specie of pet since.
I think he's cute, and it's really funny to hide behind a tree or something and send him off to slay a questing member of the alliance while I watch. He's in there like lightning and hits like thunder.

Where do i find a hyena that have 'Tendon rip' spell cause i only founded with other spells :(

Comment by Zheck

This is the best Feriocity pet for arena. If you play a gib team, the snare and self-res can be more useful than the toughness and utility of a crab/scorpid. And if you play 50/21/0 the additional damage is better in the end.

Comment by 264941

i think if they added a bleed as damaging for 10 sec the hyena wouldnt be op since the cd is 20 sec and i wouldnt mind if they did that if they put the cd to 25 if they did this would easily be my favorite. especially when he makes his little excited whimper when he goes tearing towards the enemy. for everything asthetic the hyena is the best. imo

Comment by 291342

If you want a happy permanently Hyena, get him maxed out blood thirsty. I dont even buy him meat anymore. i just send him to random critters and he acts like a hyena. He chews on them and gets happy doing it! You cant go wrong.... Best BG pet ever btw! I have the Giggler color pattern Hyena. His name is Jack Napeir, the Joker's real name. If you like Bud or Lou, thats the name of the Joker's Hyena's in the comic series.

To make a long story short, I was fostering a newborn cat that my friend needed help taking care of for a few weeks. He didn't have a name yet so I named him Glasgow because it seemed like he was always smiling at me. A glasgow smile is the cutting of someones mouth in order to form a permanent smile on their face. The most obvious reference to it is The Joker in the new Batman movie The Dark Knight. Since he has been renamed though I don't really mind if people use the name. Thought it would be a good name for a hyena because of their reference to being jokers.

My hunter is lvl 80, and has had her hyena since lvl 16. Ive tested other pets- cats, raptors, and even tamed Terokkarantula- but none compare to the effectiveness and survivability of my hyena. He's served as main tank in many groups.
I also like the fact that hyenas are quiet pets. No roaring; no howling; no yawning; no stomping; no wings flapping. So they aren't annoying me or the ppl around me.

Comment by 214759

As of patch 3.0.8., the hyenas now have a hunchbacked appearance.

Comment by 49861

As of patch 3.0.8 hyenas hold their heads low in a sort of hunchback position. This only occurs while standing still.

I really enjoyed using a hyena for levelling up, initially I just grabbed one after my stable bugged out and deleted one of my pets but I found the little guy too handy to give up. They keep mobs snared long enough to either kill it or for the pet to gain aggro.

Comment by 335405

this pet uses a skill called 'Tendron Rip' which reduces oponents speed for 50% for couple of secs and has 20 sec cd :)

I dont know why they have the 59 Hyena from Dire Maul listed under 'Pets' if you can't tame them.
laaame.

I'd say the collection of skin colours is pretty cool!

Comment by Dwarfiesgosquish

Along with the spider BEST BG pet ever in my opinion! stops those little gnome rogues from getting outta reach! Also useful for stopping Flag Carrier advances, that is if you can get enough ppl with you to take out the group that always follows the flag carrier.

My best friend has had a hyena since she was level 15 in TBC and has always had it with her simply cause she wanted one, nothing more. She has always stated 'A good hunter can make any pet work' and it rings true, she's a fabulous hunter.
(though i may be biased, she is my friend after all.)

i love these dudes, even with the hunchback their little mickey mouse ears always make me smile :)

I just had to get one of these for my hunter named harlequinn. It's named Lou ;)

I must say, hyenas are the best ferocity pets for hunters who dont have exotic pet taming. I caught one at lvl 16 or so, I'm lvl 41 now and I've been using different models of Hyenas I've caught in differnt places most of that time. I'm sure at 60 I'll get a devilsaur or core hound or a silithid, but Ima use Max =D until then. Unless i decide i want king bengalash or whatever he's called, he is pretty sweet. FEROCITY FTW

Comment by supabilly29

its a cool pet but if you gooing for look try a ghost pet of northend

Comment by 547908

Hey, just to let you know, I am currently a BM hunter at level 69 now, and I dont know about you guys, but my cunning pets do way more dps than ferocity pets now due to the Wolverine Bite cunning pets can now get. In randoms with some buffs, (like kings on me and might on my pet) on a boss i can pull around 1400 dps, and normally around 52-59% of my dps is my pet. I tested out a couple of cunning pets, and the ones that seem to the most damage is the Nether Ray, and its strange because its CD on its ability is 28 seconds. Strangely enough my Sporebat is one of my highest DPS pets, then followed by the Chimaera and then my raptor (which is my backup pet if the boss does alot of damage to pets.)
So I guess since the change on Wolverine Bite, I see cunning pets the #1 on dps again, but ferocity not much behind.

This is my pvp pet.I love it and ever since my first battleground using it I was hooked!Tendon Rip Is very useful against melee AND ranged classes that try to run away,I use it all the time in 2v2 arena and would recommend this pet to any hunter that does pvp.

Comment by Shaitan051

Ability USED to be awesome, a boost to bleed effects isn't very useful. Better to just stick with your wolf.
Edit: Scratch that, Wolves got nerfed too.

Comment by 192690

While the new Tendon Rip is certainly less useful in PVP than the old version, it is a very solid ability to have in dungeons.
Three pet families can provide this debuff, but the other two (Boar and Rhino) are Tenacity while Hyenas are Ferocity which provides higher DPS.
It's true that this debuff isn't highest priority pet ability to bring to a raid. Cats and Wolves are both higher priority and so are Core Hounds and Shale Spiders if you are Beast Mastery specced. And there are probably a few other pet abilities that are arguably more important than this, but there are a few things to remember about this debuff:
1) This will give noticable DPS increases to Assassination and Combat Rogues and help give extra threat to a Warrior tank. It will also give some extra DPS to most Fury Warriors once we can get past 80. Note that none of these Class/Specs can provide this debuff for themselves.
2) While Cat Druids and Subtlety Rogues can provide this debuff for themselves. If you provide it for them, they will be able to save their energy for their more powerful attacks (Shred and Backstab). Arms Warriors and Bear Druids don't need this though because they keep the debuff up constantly no matter what.
3) If you are Marksman spec, this ability can improve your DPS too.
tl;dr: Non-Subtlety Rogues and Non-Arms Warriors will love your Hyena. Cat Druids and Subtlety Rogues will like your Hyena. With certain talents, Hyenas can improve your own DPS too.

Log in today to find that my red hyena i've had for 4 years has been replaced with a brown mastiff. Now i can't retrain the same red hyena till I can reach lvl 82 that stinks!

Found Snort after 3 days of hunting a wide area, he was deep inside the chasm and didnt show up on the map until i flew low so maybe i missed him before. I suggest if your hunting him, flying low through the chasm if able. Pretty pet but looses toxic spit

Just so everyone knows, with Careful Aim, and Piercing shots this causes bleed dmg, 30% of the shot, which is chimara, steady, and aimed shots. With a hyena this amplifies that another 30%. Hitting a target dumby I get about 16% of my dmg from Piercing shots now, its very noticable. This is in MM spec. Worth having for either pvp or mostly raiding.

is it me or the HyenaSkin and the HyenaSkinOrange is the same one? but lightly or darker o_O

Comment by 632461

Not true. The buff cats bring (500 agi/str) can be brought by any warrior or any DK, so it's a pretty common buff. The buff wolves bring (5% crit) isn't as common, but it's not smart to raid without it so any solid raid leader will have it covered. The 30% bleed debuff, on the other hand, is only brought by three specific specs, two of which are rarely used in raids: arms warriors, sub rogues, and feral druids. It's more likely you won't have the 30% bleed debuff than the agi/str buff or the 5% crit buff.
As far as how useful it is if you (marks hunter) are the only bleed class in your raid: let's assume you do 10% of your damage from Piercing Shots. If you buff that by 30%, that increases your overall damage by 3%. That's a pretty low estimate, too: PS can be 12-15% of my damage on fights where I can use aimed shot more, which obviously increases the value of the buff. Don't forget prot warriors, fury warriors, combat rogues and mutilate rogues all do bleed damage that can be buffed by this pet.
Obviously, you should use a cat, wolf or ravager if you don't have the buffs those pets bring. But if you DO have those buffs, then the hyena is the next best choice.

Hyena Sucks!

Comment by MABGamer6407

Now you can carry around a part of Hogger's family tree with you.

Comment by Qirajin

Call me superficial but this is the hunter pet family that still has the least good-looking skins, in my opinion.
My menagerie was planned to hold one of each kinds of pet, but I cannot bring myself to tame a Hyena because I know I'll never use it in combat because of their poor appearance.
I hope they'll get a better model in the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion.
